Are you sitting down for this? I hope so.
When I decided to take on the work of creating the Lawsuits database sixteen months ago I wasn’t quite sure how to go about it. I didn’t have the technical skill at the time to do anything fancy. All I had was a list of eighteen or so lawsuits. Questions abounded: how to organize and present the data? Which data points will be particularly useful to victims, parents, reporters, attorneys, advocates, and so forth?
Working mostly on nights and weekends, I put together a table of lawsuits tracking a few data points. As the coding structure became too cumbersome to be sustainable a better solution was required. So I converted the table into a database that had several advantages over the old table, including pagination, search, and sorting functions. I also expanded the number of data points tracked in each case by 50% (from six to nine), and added a Changelog so users can track updates more easily.
In the not-too-distant future I will be making an even bigger upgrade.
We are now sitting at roughly ninety cases, with several to add soon. Building the database has required a lot of commitment – but that is bearing fruit. Piqued with intrigue by the database, many reporters in the mainstream media interviewed and cited my work and this website – roughly sixty times before September 24th.
In a mere three weeks later, I am approaching one hundred and sixty. In other words, in the last three weeks there has been an explosion of over one hundred media citations, interviews, and references of my work.
Those include names like NPR, Newsweek, ABC, NBC, and The Associated Press. I am particularly grateful to The Associated Press. As it is a syndicated publication, their article was republished to over one hundred news sites, kicking the exposure into overdrive. Those sites include The New York Times, CBS, Houston Chronicle, NBC, The Washington Times, The Washington Post, and countless others.
I stopped counting at one hundred.
I managed to record several of the interviews, which you can view below. And below the videos you can see a sample of news sites that republished the Associated Press article.
